LED Keyboard

By

A keyboard type created for the power pc user, an LED keyboard is just like any other... only not! First, an LED is an acronym for the phrase ‘Light Emitting Diode' and refers to a light device which comes on when electricity is passed through it. Unlike a normal light bulb, an LED is a light that won't burn out from power surges or perpetual use.

Now wait, I can hear your questions. Why put an LED into a keyboard? That would be silly, normally. But say for instance that you play numerous online games. In my case, we could use World of Warcraft and 2Moons as examples. These games use a function called ‘hotkeys' to perform specialized tasks in the game. Some days, even a veteran gamer like me wishes for an easy button, and these LED keyboards have it.

Here's how it works:

  • Buy an LED keyboard.
  • Program your hotkeys into the keyboard's software.
  • Play your game, using that game's keyboard settings.

Huzzah, that's all there is to it.

Here are a couple of nice LED keyboards I’ve seen:

Luxiium - This keyboard is all pastel pretty LED lights and silver sharpness in body. Each key has a separate LED, and this means that each key can be programmed for a certain hotkey, creating a kaleidoscope of colors beneath your fingertips!

Optimus - A keyboard with a specific keyset for Photoshop? Say no more, and sign me up! The Optimus LED keyboard is revolutionary. It is a little wider than the standard keyboard, but for good reason. On the far left side of the keyboard is a ten key function area, each key in this area switches the active LED in each key on the keyboard to suit the setting you've chosen. It's nothing short of awesome.

If you're not into key-switching power keyboards with LED action, how about a normal keyboard with an LED backlighting system? There are plenty of keyboards out now which feature colored light which rises from beneath the keys. Just make sure you don't drop cheese doodle crumbs inside, you'll block the pretty light!

I've started looking at them kinda hard for myself, the only thing is that the one game I play a bunch of (10+ hours a week when Hublove wasn't around) has a chat function I use alot, so I'd be swapping modes a bunch. Still, every LED keyboard I've seen is pretty darn sweet.
