Help! I forgot Mother's Day!

It happens more often than people may want to believe, one holiday or another goes by and suddenly you hear about a friend or co-worker having completely forgotten about it.  Mother’s Day is one many folks get away with a phone call and a card, but what do you do if you’ve missed telling your mom she’s awesome?

Before you pull out your hair, take out a bank loan to buy her an expensive gift or devote yourself to mom duty for the next year, why not try a few of the handy things that you may think are small, silly or even a little like you’re a kid doing chores again, and earn your mother’s appreciation through thoughtful (and cheap) methods?

Be the Handyman (or woman!)

As your mom ages – and surely she’s doing so beautifully – it’s a fact that there will be fewer and fewer things she either has the inclination or ability to do herself.  Volunteer your time to your mom and help her get some of those things she’s meant to take care of done.  Chances are good that this is one of your top options in both doing something nice for your mom in the event that you forgot Mother’s Day.

Turn the tables!

Do you remember a dish that your mother served on special occasions that made everybody in the family go wild?  This special treat was the kind of thing, in my house, that got rooms cleaned, homework done, behind the ears washed twice, and the television shut off.  Invite your mom over for a surprise dinner – and prepare this meal for your family.  When it’s served, remind your mom how much you loved this meal, and thank her for giving you the lifelong memory.  This is guaranteed to bring out the motherly “Aww!”

Confess!

Don’t wait until she mentions your familial flub.  If you know Mother’s Day is important to your mommy, and you miss it, get in touch with her as soon as you can, and let her know how genuinely sorry you are for missing the chance to spoil her, if even for an hour.  Don’t make excuses, just apologize and try to find a way to make it up to her.

Prepare for next year!

It’s a fact; Mother’s Day is like any other holiday when it comes to retail sales.  If you missed showering your mum in special gifts, hit the stores for some deals on Mother’s Day stuff, cards, stuffed animals, whatever it is that you think your mom would love.  Get ready to blow through those 50-75% off sales, my friend – but remember to mark your calendar for next year!
